Why Wellbeing?

A balanced approach to work and personal life enhances employee satisfaction, productivity, and overall wellbeing. For employers, prioritizing work-life balance can lead to

  • reduced turnover,

  • lower stress levels,

  • increased productivity,

  • and a more engaged workforce.

Workplace Wellbeing Policy

A workplace wellbeing is a good starting point for prioritizing work-life balance at work. The policy should outline the roles and responsibilities around work-life balance and workplace wellbeing including:

  • Organizational/Executive Leadership’s role

  • Supervisors’ role

  • Employees’ role

 Wellbeing as a Competitive Advantage

Employers are leveraging their work-life balance philosophy to attract and retain talent. Many employer brands are focused on this element in their job ads, career pages, benefits communication strategy, training strategy, and social media presence.

Highlighting in your job advertisements that you offer remote or hybrid work or flexible schedules will increase your applicant pool.

Strategies for Maintaining Workplace Wellbeing and Preventing Burnout

In addition to having a policy (see the attached template), here are some strategies organizations can employ to support maintaining workplace wellbeing.

  1. Flexible Work Arrangements: Set up remote/flexible work arrangements. This can reduce stress and increase productivity.

  2.  Wellness Programs: Implement programs that promote physical and mental health, such as gym memberships, mindfulness sessions, and access to mental health resources.

  3. Regular Feedback and Communication: Encourage open communication between employees and supervisors to address any concerns and provide support where needed.

  4. Encouraging Breaks and Time Off: Promote a culture where taking breaks and time off is not only accepted but encouraged. This helps prevent burnout and maintains high levels of productivity.

  5. Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs): Provide access to EAPs that offer confidential counseling and support services for personal and work-related issues.

  6. Wellness Half-Days or Full Days: Offer employees the option to take half-days or full days dedicated to wellness activities.

  7. Purpose Pauses: Implement scheduled pauses where no meetings can be booked, encouraging employees to take breaks or vacations.

  8. Wellness Providers: Bring in wellness providers like massage therapists to offer on-site services.

  9. Mindfulness and Meditation Sessions: Organize regular mindfulness and meditation sessions to help employees manage stress and improve focus.

  10. Team Building Activities: Plan team-building activities that promote social interaction and collaboration, such as group outings or workshops.

  11. Healthy Snacks and Meals: Provide healthy snacks and meals in the workplace to encourage better nutrition and energy levels.

  12. Fitness Challenges: Create fitness challenges or competitions to motivate employees to stay active and healthy.

  13. Set Realistic Expectations: Avoid overloading employees with unrealistic deadlines and ensure workloads are manageable.

Strategies for Leadership Wellbeing and Burnout Prevention

If you are in a people-leadership position or any support role, including HR, ensuring you have proper support is paramount.

  1. EAP Management Consults:  Many EAP programs offer a service for supervisors to call to seek confidential guidance on personnel issues, process emotions around leadership stress, and prepare for difficult conversations.

  2. Peer Support: Carving out space on management team meeting agendas and creating opportunities for supervisors and managers to connect with each other, share leadership ideas/resources, and confidentially debrief difficult leadership challenges is a great way to support leadership wellbeing, growth, and learning.

  3. Leadership Training:  Leading is challenging and it requires a committment to lifelong learning. Make sure you are seeking out opportunities for training and learning to continuosly build leadership skills. Learn more about leadership training here.

  4. Leadership Coaching:  Leadership coaching can be more effective than training because it is individualized and focuses on practical skill application and leadership growth in a safe space. Having a leadership coach has moved the dial in my leadership confidents, more than training ever has.

Inclusion, Belonging, and Wellbeing

Creating an inclusive workplace that ensures a socially safe environment, where employees from all identities and backgrounds feel a sense of belonging, is a crucial element of effective safety and wellbeing strategies

Building a wellbeing strategy that focuses on inclusion and a safe workplace for people of all identities involves several key components:

  1. Embrace Inclusion and Belonging: There are several benefits to building a diverse and inclusive workforce such as increased innovation and better decision-making.

  2. Develop Inclusive Policies: Develop and enforce policies that promote diversity and inclusion at all levels of the organization. Ideas include: A solid workplace accommodations policy, practices that normalize reasonable accommodations in the workplace; floating holiday policies (rather than set holidays); parental leave policies; setting up welcoming spaces for lactating mothers; benefits programs that support employees from different backgrounds, ages, and identities; etc.

  3. Tackle Bias Through Training: Implement interrupting bias training, especially for those making hiring and employment decisions.

  4. Empower Inclusive Leadership: Train leaders to create safe and inclusive team environments where all voices are heard.

  5. Foster Open Communication: Encourage managers to have regular one-on-one meetings with team members to discuss their wellbeing and to troubleshoot any workplace issues they might be facing.

  6. Promote Inclusive Hiring Practices:  Use hiring techniques to reduce bias in the recruitment process. Ensure  interview panels are diverse to provide different perspectives and reduce bias.

By embracing these strategies, your organization can foster a vibrant and supportive atmosphere where employee wellbeing and work-life balance truly thrive. Not only will this boost employee happiness and satisfaction, but it will also propel your organization towards greater success. Let’s make wellbeing a priority and watch our teams flourish together!
