According to a Gallup study, the top two reasons people are promoted to manager is….

1) Success in a prior non-management role, and

2) Tenure.

People without prior leadership experience are promoted all the time.

To be successful as first-time leaders, they need instruction, support, and accountability.

The best time to teach “leadership” is when someone is new to the role. The best way to teach “leadership” is through leadership coaching.

Do you remember your first leadership position? 

Like me, I bet you were excited and nervous all at once. I knew I was meant to help others and I felt that a leadership position gave me the best opportunity to do that. I mustered up all my confidence, read a ton of books, had a business degree, and I’m not afraid to say it: I had absolutely no idea what I was doing.

At the time, I was lucky enough to be working for a company that invested in a coach for me. My coach was an expert in the HR field, and she was there to coach, mentor, and train me to be successful in my new leadership position.

She helped me learn the art of managing employees and how to strategically build effective workplace relationships. I was lucky to have a coach, a valuable professional resource, someone who supported my individual professional growth and leadership abilities.

At best, as a newly promoted leader without a leadership coach, I would have taken a much longer time to get up-to-speed and to increase the productivity of my team.  At worst, I might have failed at leadership altogether.

Oftentimes there are no formal leadership training or coaching programs for newly promoted leaders. 

It’s not that the companies don’t care about their leaders’ success. The company might not have the internal resources (staff, time, expertise, etc.) to provide the coaching and training the new leader needs. 

 Leadership coaching helps new leaders:

  • Gain confidence in their decision-making abilities

  • Learn how to coach and motivate their employees

  • Improve communication skills

  • Feel supported by the company (employees who feel supported by their companies are more likely to stay)

What makes coaching different than training?

Training is designed for a wide audience, whereas coaching is individually customized for the leader’s needs.  Training is instructor-led, where coaching is a collaborative process, including self-assessment, goal setting, and feedback.
