Leadership in 2020.PNG

If you are anything like the leaders I’ve been talking with lately, you are feeling overwhelmed.

2020 started out seemingly “normal,” yet here we are more than halfway through the year now and we find ourselves amidst unprecedented legal changes, a global pandemic, and a racial equity movement.

Granted, many of the changes are positive. For example, the racial equity movement and many of the positive workplace trends as a result of COVID-19; however, with so many changes and work that needs to be done, leaders (and their teams) are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and in some cases burnt out.

The #1 thing we need as leaders right now is capacity.

And since we physically cannot create more time in the day, our time is well-spent on building personal resilience.

Do you feel resilient?

Think about the last time someone interrupted you while you were in the middle of working on something important. Was your response friendly?

Did you exude patience? Or, did you snap at the person?

Did you feel negative after the interaction? Snapping at people and impatience are signs of overwhelm.

This is just one example of how leadership stress and overwhelm can have a negative impact on employees.

Why is resilience critical to leading through change?

Resilience, the ability to bounceback and overcome challenges, is critical to productivity and engagement, especially during times of change. An organization’s overall resilience starts with its leadership.

  • Personal resilience => Team Resilience => Capacity to Manage Change

Leaders must prioritize personal resilience.

Only from a place of personal resilience can we build our team’s resilience.

And again, if leaders and their teams are more resilient, only then can they effectively manage change.

As you head into the rest of the week, think about….

  • What is one thing you can commit to this week to cultivate personal resilience?

  • What is the best way you can help your team build resilience?
